Driving in hot weather

At the time of writing we are in the midst of the third heatwave of the summer, and the following advice from IAM RoadSmart may well come in useful if we have another one. Driving in hot weather can quickly become uncomfortable and tiring, especially on longer journeys. High temperatures, strong sunlight, and Preparing your vehicle and yourself properly can make a significant difference to your comfort, safety, and overall driving experience.

Water

Keep fresh water in the car to ensure all occupants stay hydrated. This helps reduce fatigue and keeps you more alert during your journey.

Sunglasses

When needed, wear polarised, UV-blocking sunglasses to reduce glare from the sun. They are especially useful during low sun conditions in the early morning and late evening.

Screenwash

Screenwash is particularly important at this time of year, as pollen can quickly build up on your vehicle. This can lead to dirty windscreens and reduced visibility, so keeping your washer fluid topped up is essential.

Coolant checks

Checking and topping up your coolant levels during warmer weather can help reduce the risk of your vehicle overheating, especially on longer journeys or in heavy traffic.

Sunscreen

Breaking down in hot weather can leave you exposed to sun, heat, and dehydration. It’s a good idea to keep SPF 50 in your car during the summer months, in case you’re stuck outdoors for any length of time.
